Sailor Popeye sets sail on Popeye

The Musical Adventures of Popeye and Olive will bring the famed comic and cartoon characters to life for a children’s show in the Cabaret Fringe Festival next month.

Producer Tracey Davis says the one-hour comedy from On The Fly Improvised Theatre will stay true to the “hammy and fun” tone of the cartoons.

“It’s an adventure where we get to meet Popeye and Olive Oyl and they fall in love,” she says.

“(Popeye’s nemesis) Brutus is hot on the trail of them to try and recapture Olive.

“There’s a bit of a love triangle going on.”

Eugene Suleau will play Popeye alongside Teresa De Gennaro as Olive.

Jarrad Parker will be Brutus while Davis will take on the role of Popeye’s other enemy, the evil Sea Hag.

The show will be on Sunday, June 9, 16, 23 and 30 at 10am, with a second show on June 9 at 2pm.
